Give the gift of education!
WHO: Since arriving in Guinea Bissau in 2002, the Schafers have worked to reach some of the hardest to reach people in Guinea Bissau. One major way they serve the people is through rural schools, now functioning in 3 extremely remote areas. One school alone serves 130 children!
WHAT: Desks. Not something we think of often in the United States as being a barrier to education. In Guinea Bissau, desks are hard to come by. Most often students use makeshift desks out of mud bricks and boards.
WHEN: We have an urgent need today to purchase 100 desks for the three rural schools. The government inspectors do not want schools to open this term without proper desks, and those are nearly impossible to obtain! We do not want these children to lack the opportunity for education simply because they lack a proper desk.
WHERE: We can partner with Jason Atkins, a Hope Remembered missionary, who runs a welding and metal fabrication vocational program in Guinea Bissau. Through his program, we will be employing local Guineans to make desks that are durable and sustainable, made out of a combination of metal and wood.
WHY: Each desk will be used for years to come. These desks will allow students to continue pursuing their education in Guinea Bissau, a luxury. The project will employ local Guineans to learn the skills of welding and metal fabrication, providing their families with much needed income.
HOW MUCH: Each desk costs $100. Your donation of any amount towards our goal of $10,000 for 100 desks, will help kids stay in school, provide support to the vocational school, and provide income for local welders. 100% of your donation will go directly to this project.
