New deep well and school being built in the Village of Poel (2024)

The team in Quebo has been working hard to build a new school building for the children in the village of Poel.  The new block schoolhouse will replace the little shack they had been using and make room for many more students to receive an education.  A deep well is also being drilled nearby to supply the school and village with clean drinking water.

  • Old school structure
  • Kids learning in the makeshift schoolroom
  • Firing the adobe brick to make them more durable
  • Beginning work on the foundation
  • First blocks being laid
  • Making sure the walls are level
  • Walls going up!
  • Starting to look like a school building!

Easter Campout 2024

Each year around Easter the members of the three churches planted by the team in Quebo gather for a time of training and fellowship at a nearby river. It is exciting to see how God is working through the church and bringing new believers into the kingdom!

  • Baptizing new followers of Jesus

Construction almost complete on the new school in Bissau (2023)

Jeremias School in Bissau is almost completed.  At the moment there are 70 students attending the school and receiving an education as well as a meal each day.  The school goes from kindergarten to 7th grade

  • It takes lots of cement for a project of this size
  • Metal tubing for roof construction
  • Newly poured entryway for cars
  • Security Gate
  • Walls almost complete!
  • Putting finishing touches on roof

New School opening in Fall of 2021

The end of the rainy season in Guinea Bissau means that school is starting back.  We are excited about this year because we were able to help an indigenous missionary named Jeremias purchase a larger piece of land in the Capital of Bissau to expand his Christian school.  This will give more kids access to a good education and give them the opportunity to hear the gospel.  He was able to build temporary classrooms that will be sufficient for this school year but in the future we hope to help him build a larger permanent building.

  • Clearing the land of termite mounds
  • Framing classrooms with palm wood
  • building the doors
  • We hired a local carpenter to build the desks
  • Temporary classroom structures are complete
  • The kids are ready for the first day of school
  • Our partner Jeremias with the students at the new school
  • Lining out the area to be used as a community garden
  • Creating a garden for the kids to use
  • putting the finishing touches on the garden plots

Rainy Season and Christmas in Quebo 2020

The rainy season in Guinea Bissau has come to an end and the team in Quebo once again was blessed with a good harvest.  The corn has been harvested and silage has been chopped and stored for the dry season.  Cooler temperatures have arrived and everyone enjoyed spending Christmas together!

  • Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the team in Quebo!
  • Enjoying a nice Christmas meal
  • Church has been able to meet again. They had to stop for a few months due to Covid restrictions
  • Guineans also enjoy a nice Christmas ham. The only difference is they have to prepare it themselves.
  • Clearing land is hard work!
  • Making silage to store to feed the animals during the dry season
  • Collecting boulders for the foundation of the bathrooms
  • Beginning construction on new bathrooms for the school in Quebo

Jeremias’ School in Bissau hoping to expand

Hope Remembered has been supporting the work of a local pastor and evangelist named Jeremias M’Batna for almost 6 years.  He now has a growing Christian school in the Capital as well as a church.  We are currently working to raise the funds he needs to buy more land and expand his school.

Dry Season Vegetable Gardening 2019/2020

The dry season in Guinea Bissau lasts from November until May.  The early part of the dry season is the best time to grow vegetables because of the cooler temperatures and lower humidity.  In the cool season of 2019/2020 Travis had great success in Quebo with his garden.  He used drip irrigation to conserve water in the demonstration garden behind their house and also had the opportunity to install drip irrigation for a local pastor that lives in a village about three hours from them.  Our desire in the future is to train others how to use drip irrigation and provide affordable drip kits for people to purchase

  • There is never a shortage of kids that are eager to help
  • The kids helping plant seeds in seed trays
  • Preparing a garden in a nearby village
  • Installing drip tape for a local pastor
  • The garden produced a variety of different greens that we introduced to the people
  • Lettuce being grown using drip tape irrigation
  • The neighbor kids enjoyed taking home fresh produce to their families.
  • Tomatoes starting to bear fruit!
  • The green beans we brought over should help provide better nutrition for the people if they introduce them to their diet. They grow well in the cool season.
  • Installing a water tank and solar pump to run the irrigation in the dry season

Rainy season farming 2019

Guinea Bissau has a rainy season that lasts from June until the end of October.  This is the best time of year for planting crops such as corn, rice, sunflowers, and other field crops.  The team in Quebo had a lot of success during the rainy season of 2019 using the Farming God’s Way method.

  • Travis and one of the neighbor kids planting beans behind their house
  • Holes ready to be planted!
  • Preparing rows to plant cucumbers and squash.
  • Digging the holes to plant corn. Each hole gets amended with compost before planting.
  • Corn coming up nicely
  • Harvesting the corn!
  • Samuel enjoyed playing in the corn
  • Shelling the corn with a manual corn sheller
  • We had to dry the corn before we stored it for the dry season
  • We introduced sunflowers to the people for the first time
  • Samuel and Sarah hanging out in our backyard garden
  • The kids enjoyed helping separate the sunflower seeds from the flower.

Water tower construction complete!

In January of 2020 the team in Quebo began constructing a 35 foot water tower that will be used for irrigation and to provide clean water for their neighbors.  It was quite a challenge since they had to design and build it themselves with little experience but it all worked out.  They plan on installing a 1000g tank on top that will supply water for drip irrigation and drinking water.

  • Digging the foundation for the pillars
  • preparing the footer
  • The footer is poured and rebar set in place to prepare to pour the pillars
  • Building the pillar forms
  • all of the forms in place
  • level 1 of 3 almost complete
  • Pouring the concrete in 1 bucket at time
  • Samuel and Travis inspecting the work
  • 2nd level almost complete
  • The kids helping unload gravel to make more concrete
  • There was always a crowd observing the work
  • Last level almost complete!
  • Ready to pour the top platform
  • Forms are in place and ready to pour the concrete
  • We had to use pulleys to get the concrete to the top of the tower one bucket at a time

Well completed in Quebo!

In 2019 because of your generosity  Hope Remembered was able to drill a deep well in Quebo.  This well should have water all year long.  It has already been a blessing to the people who live near the project and who come get water in the dry season.  It will also serve as the water source to irrigate the project land for growing crops in the dry season.  Check out the slide show of the well drilling process!

  • Well drilling rig got stuck on its way to the project land
  • The kids were excited to see the well drilling rig
  • Drilling!
  • Capping the well
  • Building the pump house
  • Pump house and gate installed.

The Atkins Family joins Hope Remembered

The Atkins family joined Hope Remembered in 2019. They have lived and served in Guinea Bissau since 2006. The organization they previously served with decided to move their vocational school to the Capital city of Bissau but the Atkins felt like the Lord wanted them to continue serving in the town of Canchungo where they have lived for many years. Hope Remembered partnered with them to help them build and develop their own project in Canchungo so they can continue serving and discipling the people where the Lord wants them to be.

Dry Season Gardening 2017/2018

We were able to take what we learned in 2016 and apply it to a larger garden.  Lots of the neighbor kids were really interested in what we were doing so we gave them their own little plots to care for.  It was a great learning experience for them and they were proud to be able to take home produce to their families.

  • Filling the tank
  • The kids had their own little plots

Our first experiment with drip Irrigation in 2016

In 2016 we had the opportunity to create a dry season garden using drip tape irrigation at the project in Quebo.  We had great results and learned a lot about farming in the hottest, driest part of the year.  This type of irrigation doesn’t require pumps and water towers so it is an affordable option for the locals.  All you need is a 50 gallon drum and an elevated platform to water the garden.  We drew water from the well and filled the tank once or twice a day depending on the temperature.

  • Setting up the tank
  • Results after a few weeks
  • Extra produce was sold in the market!
